You can sign up on Facebook to create your account and it automatically asks you to download the Messenger app to send and receive messages.

For additional security and privacy, you can turn on the app lock feature on the Messenger app. This requires the fingerprint or face ID from your device to open the app.

Keep in mind that you have to set up a face or fingerprint ID and passcode on your iOS device before the app lock can work. If your ID doesn't work when trying to open the app, you'll be asked for your passcode instead.
