How To Activate Esim On Iphone X
Learn how to use dual SIM with an eSIM on the Apple iPhone XS or newer running iOS 13 or later.
Download your eSIM
- For most Postpaid T-Mobile customers, when you change the SIM to the iPhone's EID, you're automatically prompted to install the assigned cellular plan. Just tap the notification to complete.
- T-Mobile Prepaid customers must download and use the T-Mobile Prepaid eSIM app.
Transfer your physical SIM to eSIM with another iPhone
You can use your two iPhones to transfer your physical SIM to an eSIM with these steps:
- Make sure both iPhones are set up and logged into the same iCloud account.
- Make sure your current iPhone is powered on, has the physical SIM inserted, and is next to your new iPhone.
- On the new iPhone, tapSettings >Cellular >Add Cellular Plan.
- Select your phone number that's connected to the physical SIM. If it doesn't show, you can manually change the SIM to the iPhone's EID.
- Tap Convert Cellular Plan > Convert to eSIM > OK.
- On the current iPhone, tap Transfer. If you get any errors, check out the troubleshooting page.
- Remove the physical SIM from your old iPhone.
Transfer your eSIM between iPhones
You'll be prompted to transfer your eSIM when you're setting up your iPhone for the first time. Use these steps if you skipped that part of setup:
- On the new iPhone, tapSettings >Cellular >Add Cellular Plan.
- Choose the eSIM to transfer from the list, then tap Add Cellular Plan.
- On the current iPhone, tap Transfer. If you get any errors, check out the troubleshooting page.
Scan a QR code
If your eSIM doesn't automatically download or you need to recover it, follow these steps:
- From the home screen, tapSettings > Cellular >Add Cellular Plan.
- Use your iPhone camera to scan the QR code.
- If you're asked to enter a confirmation code to activate the eSIM, enter the number provided with the QR code.
Enter the information manually
If necessary, you can manually enter your plan information using these steps:
- From the home screen, tapSettings >Cellular >Add Cellular Plan.
- Tap Enter Details Manually at the bottom of your screen.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to manually enter the required information.
Label your plans / lines
After your second plan is activated, you can label your plans / lines for easy identification. For example, you can label one plan Business and the other plan Personal.
- Tap Settings > Cellular.
- Tap the number you wish to change the label for, then tap Cellular Plan Label.
- Choose to create a custom label or select from the following labels:
- Primary
- Secondary
- Personal
- Business
- Travel
- Cell Data
Switch between or erase eSIMs
You can store more than one eSIM in your iPhone, but you can use only one at a time.
Switch between eSIM
To switch which eSIM is active, follow these steps:
- Tap Settings > Cellular > Cellular Plans.
- Tap the plan you want to use, then tap Turn On This Line.
Erase eSIM
You can only have 10 eSIM profiles stored on your device at a time. To delete an eSIM profile, follow these steps:
- Tap Settings > Cellular.
- Tap the plan you want to delete.
- Tap Remove Cellular Plan.
View how much signal each line has
When you have both the SIM card slot and the eSIM active, you'll see slightly different bars of signal. One line will have the normal bars of signal and the other line will have dots of signal just below. When you swipe down to view the Control Center, you'll see each line with bars of signal and the carrier name to help you identify which is which. Check out the screenshots below.
Choose your default line for voice, messages, and data
You can set your default line, which iMessage and FaceTime use. Your iPhone will also use the default line when you call or send a message to someone who isn't in your Contacts app. Or you can choose to use one line for cellular data only and use your default line for calls and messages. With iOS 13, you can choose to use either or both numbers for iMessage and FaceTime.
- From the Home screen, tap Settings > Cellular > Default Line.
- Choose from the following options. [Plan Label] will be whatever name you choose for your lines.
- Use [Plan Label] as your default line: If you select this option, this line will be used by default for voice, SMS, and data.
- Use [Plan Label] for cellular data only: You might want to select this option if you're traveling internationally and only want to use the line for data.
Choose which number to use for a call
You can switch phone numbers before you make a call using these steps:
- If you're calling someone in your Favorites list:
- Tap the i icon.
- Tap the current phone number.
- Tap your other number.
- If you're using the keypad to dial the number:
- Enter the phone number.
- Tap the phone number, near the top of the screen.
- Tap the number you want to use.
Choose which number to use for a message
You can use SMS/MMS to send messages with either phone number. To switch phone numbers before you send a message, use these steps:
- Tap Messages.
- Tap the New button, in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Enter your contact's name.
- Tap the current phone number.
- Tap the number you want to use.
Choose which number to use for cellular data
You can only use one number at a time to use cellular data. To change which number uses cellular data, use these steps:
- Go to Settings > Cellular.
- Tap Cellular Data.
- Tap the number you want to use cellular data.
Manage cellular settings
To change your cellular settings for each of your plans, use these steps:
- Go to Settings > Cellular.
- Tap the phone line whose options you want to set.
- Tap each option and set it as you normally would.
